All the ships of the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) were built in Québec by the shipyards MIL Tracy, or MIL Davie of Lauzon, later called Industries Davie. Bateaux Turbec de Ste-Catherine built the M.V. Grue-des-Îles.
Owing to their numerous crossings, the ships undergo a meticulous maintenance program established according to the number of hours they are in operation. Regular and rigorous inspections give information to mechanics about the necessary tune-ups or repairs.
Most of the repairs are done by mechanics on board. Sometimes, larger-scale works are completed at Atelier 85 in Québec City, the mechanical maintenance workshop for the whole STQ fleet. Each ship also visits the dry dock every 4 to 5 years to check the state of its submerged parts (hull, propeller).
Ships are equipped with modern emergency evacuation and fire-fighting equipments. All crewmembers regularly take part in emergency situation feignings at sea.
Also each ship has systems designed to protect the environment. It is the case for treating liquid waste and oily liquid.
STQ ships cut across the River, hold out against the winds, the strength of the currents and the difficult conditions of ice, and adapt themselves to the tides thus allowing the transport of thousands of passengers, vehicles and the distribution of tons of goods from one shore to shore.
